A longtime Upper East Side favorite, Barking Dog is a casual American bistro with a playful canine theme and a serious commitment to pet-friendly hospitality. Inside, the decor features whimsical dog motifs and a retro diner ambiance, but it’s the outdoor patio that gives Barking Dog its name – complete with a doggy water fountain (often shaped like a fire hydrant) where visiting pups can have a drink.

Dogs are permitted at all outdoor tables. The UES location’s patio wraps around the corner and can accommodate many pups at once, while the newer Hell’s Kitchen location also has an outdoor café section by a fountain. No dogs are allowed inside the interior dining rooms (in accordance with NYC regulations), but the patio is open year-round (with heaters in winter) for those dining with dogs. All breeds and sizes are welcome – regulars range from tiny Yorkies in purses to a Great Dane who often sprawls by the hostess stand outside. Cats and other pets can technically sit outside too, though one will most commonly see dogs.

Pet Perks: True to its name, Barking Dog always has water bowls available – in fact, the UES spot’s iconic feature is a little dog drinking fountain in the outdoor seating area, so pups can hydrate themselves.

Staff are quick to bring a bowl to your table as well, and often have Milk-Bones or dog biscuits behind the counter if you ask. The spacious patio means your dog can lounge without bothering neighboring tables; there’s room to tie leashes to the fence or your chair. On weekends, the restaurant sometimes sets up a “dog parking” area (a small section with hooks and a water station) for those waiting for a table. Barking Dog has also hosted charity “yappy hours” and adoption events in the past, underscoring its community pet-friendly ethos.
